This course disseminates a 14 week doctoral experience capstone in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford Illinois. This course was created by a third year student in an entry level occupational therapy doctorate program at Drake University. This course will cover a needs assessment, literature review, three learning objectives satisfying ACOTE standards, as well as specific NICU site information covered throughout the 14 week period. This course focuses on advanced practice skills and family centered care within the NICU and is based on evidence based research. This Udemy course includes lectures, resources, and research articles to support the occupational therapy and family centered care in the NICU. Objectives and areas of focus include: describe the role(s) of an occupational therapist within a NICU setting, identify benefits of family centered care within the NICU, and identify the barriers of family centered care within the NICU. By the end of this course students will feel confident describing the roles of an occupational therapist within the NICU, as well as Identifying 3 benefits and 3 barriers of family centered care within the NICU.
