Course Description
Hello everyone my names Alfie, I am a sport nutritionist – I completed an undergraduate degree in sport and exercise science at Loughborough University, additionally I completed a masters degree in sport nutrition at Liverpool John Moores university. I have a various of work experience at a variety of institutions and settings – with key bits of experience working as a physiologist at the Ministry of Defence with the British Army, and as an intern at Science in Sport supplement company assisting with performance nutrition solutions.
This introductory course will aim to map out esports athletes and gamers as a population, some of the performance and health problems they may face. In addition, we will also try to understand the physiological demands of being an esports athlete – this physiology-first approach will allow us to provide better health and nutrition interventions.
Worryingly – Esports athletes exhibit greater body fat percentage, less lean body mass and less bone mineral content compared to age-matched controls. – This information presents nutritionists with lots of areas where they can help esports athletes, gamers and streamers to improve their overall health and esports performance.
In this 5 part series I walk you through:
- The physiological characteristics of esports athletes and the physiological demands of being an esports athlete.
- The benefits of physical activity and exercise to esports performance and health.
- Fundamental nutrition principles, how diet and supplements can improve esports performance and health.
- Sleep and its importance for health, mental health and cognition.
- Hydration and dehydration’s implications on cognition and subsequent esports performance.
