English for Career Development
English for Career Development is a course designed for non-native English speakers who are interested in advancing their careers in the global marketplace. Created by the University of Pennsylvania and funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Office of English Language Programs, this course aims to help learners improve their language skills and achieve their professional goals.
The course covers various aspects of the job search, application, and interview process in the United States while comparing and contrasting the same process in the learners’ home countries. It is divided into five units, with each unit focusing on a specific aspect of career development:
1. Unit 1: Entering the Job Market: Introduces the U.S. job application process and provides strategies for identifying jobs that match the learners’ interests and skills.
2. Unit 2: Resumes: Focuses on creating effective resumes, including formatting, and content, and tailoring them to specific job applications.
3. Unit 3: Writing a Cover Letter: Teaches learners how to write compelling cover letters that showcase their skills and experiences, as well as how to tailor them to specific job applications.
4. Unit 4: Networking: Covers the importance of networking in the job search process, including leveraging social media, attending events, and building professional relationships.
5. Unit 5: Interviewing for a Job: Provides tips and strategies for preparing for job interviews, including common interview questions, appropriate attire, and follow-up etiquette.
Throughout the course, learners will have the opportunity to explore their global career paths, build their vocabulary, and improve their language skills.
